James Lawrence Gouge, 76, of the Blue Rock Community, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, May 5, 2018, at the John F. Keever Solace Center. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Glenn and Margaret McNiel Gouge. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter: Lauren Taylor Crout; brothers: Richard, Leland, Charles and Billy Gouge; a sister: Marie Bolick; and, a nephew: Charles Wayne Gouge, Jr. Lawrence was a self-employed landscape and nursery owner. He was an active member of Blue Rock Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and taught Sunday School for a number of years.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years: Sonya Wilson Gouge; 2 daughters: Lisa Williams and husband, Horace, and Linda Crout and husband, Ricky, all of Burnsville; 2 beloved grandchildren: Brandon Wilson of Charlotte and Laura Crout of Burnsville; a sister: Genevieve Annas of Hickory; and a brother: Bobby Gouge of Burnsville. Several nieces and nephews and beloved friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 7PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Kenneth Forbes will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11AM Tuesday in Blue Rock Baptist Church Cemetery. Jim Gouge, Sherril McKinney, David Thompson, Wilbur Murphy, Bobby Atkins and Robert Delon Gouge will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
