Dorothy “Jane” (Gensler) Elwood, 88, of Burnsville, passed away quietly on August 10, 2018 at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation. Jane was born on November 16, 1929 in Lakeland, FL to the late Maynard Paul and Dorothy Stevens Gensler. The family relocated to Michigan in 1940 and, at the age of 12, she was employed as a soda jerk in Detroit. Prior to her 1947 graduation from Walled Lake High School, Jane was selected Queen of both her Junior and Senior proms and was voted ‘cutest’ by her class for the Senior yearbook. After graduation, she worked as an operator and later supervisor for the local telephone company before marrying Stuart Henry Elwood on August 13, 1950. Always an advocate for the importance of reading, Jane spent four years as the librarian at Twin Beach Elementary School and was active on several school bond issues before the family moved to Bradenton, FL in 1972. Back in Florida, Jane began a career in banking, earned a degree in Commercial Lending and ultimately retired from Barnett Bank (now Bank of America) as a Vice President. In 1992, Jane and Stu retired to their small farm in Burnsville, where they were welcomed into and became very active members of Covy Rock Free Will Baptist Church. Jane served her church family in many ways. For 20 years, she was a tireless volunteer for the annual Yancey County Library Book Sale and volunteered at several area school libraries. She also wrote a regular book review article for the Yancey Journal.
