Kathleen Cora Blankenship Whitehead, 73, of the Low Gap community, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, January 20, 2019, at home surrounded by her family. A lifetime resident of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Alvin and Lucille Arrowood Blankenship. She was the wife of J. M. Whitehead who died in April 30, 1998. Kathleen was a member of Low Gap Free Will Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Surviving are her 2 sons: Ronnie Whitehead and wife, Tracy, and Jamie Whitehead and wife, Tina; 4 grandchildren: Megan Rose and husband, Alex, Nicole, Little J. M. and Dakota; 2 great grandchildren: Axel and Cora, all of Burnsville; 3 brothers: Zeke Blankenship and wife, Elizabeth, of Colorado, Govan Blankenship and wife, Norma Jean, of Marshall, and Carl Blankenship of Pensacola; 2 sisters: Bernice McMahan and Maxine Scott; her mother-in-law: Nadine Tankersly of Big Stone Gap, VA; brother-in-law: H. C. Whitehead and wife, Barbara, of South Toe; sister-in-law: Debby Riggs and husband, Tim, of Gate City, VA; and a very special friend: Sandy Waldrop.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Blaine Whitson, Stanley McMahan and Brian Blankenship will officiate. Burial will follow in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Hubert Whitehead, Alex Rose, Randy Ray, Doug Higgins, Mark Robinson, J. M. and Dakota.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
