Wilson Blake Ray, 90, of Burnsville NC went to his heavenly home Wednesday May 16th, 2018. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Blake and Ruby Wilson Ray. He was also proceeded in death by three sisters: Helen Thomas, Doris Ray, and Mary Alice Carrol; and two brothers Earl Ray and Lawrence Ray. He was a Master Sargent in the United States Army, with active duty service in the Korean war when he was awarded the bronze star. After active duty he continued his service in the US Army reserves. He worked at Mohasco mills in Burnsville, NC until its closure, after which he worked as a Millwright. He was a gentle man, who loved his family along with sports and fishing. He was an avid UNC basketball fan, who wore the Carolina blue colors proudly.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years: Barbara Allen Ray: one daughter Ramona Cox and husband Jody Cox of Green Mountain; two grandsons Jonathan and Heather Cox of Double Island, David and Scarlett Cox of Burnsville; three great grandchildren Barrett Cox, Harper Cox, and Cassidy Cox. Several nieces and nephews, but two very special nieces Norma Raines and Cathy Nicholson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 19, 2018, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, Reverend Jerry Shelton will officiate. A graveside service will be held Saturday in the West Burnsville Cemetery following the funeral.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Saturday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
