GEORGE BUCHANAN

George Buchanan, 91, of Micaville, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Jesse and Hettie Dale Buchanan. He was a World War II Army Veteran and a Purple Heart recipient.  He was also preceded in death by sisters: Lora Robinson, Irene Presnell, Lillian Young, Jeanette Harris, Geneva Robertson, Gladys Hall and Reba Roberts and brothers: Whitt, Bill, Roy and Doyle Buchanan.  George was a retired employee of Burnsville Hosiery Mill with over 40 years of service. He was a member and Deacon of Micaville Presbyterian Church.

 

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Gladys Wyatt Buchanan and, 22 nieces and nephews. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Steve Grindstaff will officiate.  Burial will be in the Hughes Cemetery at Pleasant Gap.

 

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MARGARET BANNER MORTIMER

Margaret Banner Mortimer, 92, of Newland, NC passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2013.

 

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Gladys McLaughlin Banner of Banner Elk; her brother; Tom Banner, and, her husband; Sam Mortimer.  She is survived by her daughters; Martitia Mortimer of Newland and Read Marie (Badger) Underwood of Altamont; grandchildren, Andrea Underwood of Greensboro, Gordon Underwood of Bakersville and a great granddaughter; Caroline Underwood, also of Bakersville.

 

In addition to a lifelong career in the insurance industry, Margaret served on the Board of Trustees of Cannon Memorial Hospital for nineteen years and served on the Board of Hospice of Avery County, where she later volunteered for both organizations. 

 

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 26, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at the Dickson Gallery location on the main level of Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, NC.  A private inurnment will be held at a later date. 

The family would like to give a special thanks to Appalachian Home Care, specifically Crystal, Lisa and Beulah.

 

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Medi Home Hospice, PO Box 1357, Newland, NC 28657.

OCIE HENSLEY PENLAND

Ocie Hensley Penland, 92, of Horton Creek, went to be with the Lord, Friday, December 20, 2013, at Brookside Rehabilitation & Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Bascombe and Elvia Austin Hensley, and the wife of Charles Liston Penland who died in 1990.  She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter:  Edna Dean Penland; a son:  Charles W. Penland; a daughter:  Wilma Jean Adkins; grandsons:  Roderick Lee Adkins and William Michael Morrow, Jr. 

 

Surviving are a daughter:  Linda Penland of Burnsville; a daughter-in-law:  Mary Penland of Gray Court SC; 5 grandchildren:  Renee Adkins Richard and husband, Chad, and  Deborah Lynn Adkins, both of Simpsonville, SC, Charles W. Penland, Jr. of Woodruff, SC, Robert Martin Penland of Gray Court, SC and Amanda Morrow Hensley of Burnsville; 9 great grandchildren; 2 great, great grandchildren; 2 sisters:  Essie Boone of Weaverville and Nellie Thomas of Hickory; and, 2 brothers:  Dan Hensley and wife, Sue, of Marion and Hartcel Hensley and wife, Sue, of Asheville. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday at Elk Shoal Baptist Church on Hardscrabble Road, of which she was a member.  Rev. Stacey Elkins will officiate.  Burial will be in the John Metcalf Cemetery on Horton Creek. 

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

SERGEANT WILLIAM MICHAEL MORROW, Jr.

Sergeant William Michael Morrow, Jr., USMC Retired, age 44, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, December 19, 2013.  A native of Yancey County, he was an active Veteran of Operation Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. Will was a recipient of numerous awards and medals, including the Bronze Star with “V” for Valor, and 3 Navy and Marie Corps Achievement medals with “V” for Valor.  His maternal grandmother: Ocie Hensley Penland passed away Friday, December 20, 2013

 

Surviving are 2 sons:  Ben Morrow and wife, Chelsea, and Tyler Morrow; parents:  Mike Morrow and wife, Sharon, and Linda Penland; 2 sisters:  Amanda Hensley and Michela Boone; a brother:  Brian Morrow,; his paternal grandmother:  Opha Hylemon Morrow; and, 2 granddaughters:  Madalyn Morrow and Zoey Morrow, all of Burnsville. Numerous aunts, uncles and oher family members also survive.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Bobby Ray will officiate.  Burial will be in the John Morrow Family Cemetery, with military honors by members of the US Marine Corps.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

CHERYL JEAN BRANDON

Cheryl Jean Brandon, age 58, of Knoxville went home to be with the Lord and her parents early Monday morning, December 16, 2013. Cheryl was a member of First Baptist Church Concord. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne (W.C.) and Jean Hughes Brandon.

 

Cheryl is survived by her sister, Vicky Brandon of Knoxville.

 

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2013 in the Click Funeral Home, Farragut Chapel, Farragut, TN.  A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013 with a brief funeral service at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Pleasant Grove Church Cemetery in Green Mountain.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Missions Ministry, 11704 Kingston Pike, Farragut, TN 37934.

DAN RAYMOND McCONNELL

Dan Raymond McConnell, 67, of Hill Top Drive, Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, December 13, 2013 at his home.  A native of Danville, Ill, he was a son of the late Curtis and Dorothy Frost McConnell.  Dan was a US Navy Veteran and a commercial auto parts sales representative, with many achievements and awards.  He was a former long haul trucker with his wife.  They had been residents of Burnsville for the past 4 years.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Rachel Fabian McConnell; a brother, Jerry McConnell and wife, Karen, of Missoula, MT; and two nephews, Brad and Brian McConnell.

A memorial service will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Victory Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  Rev. Scot Garland will officiate.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

PAMELA HALL ADCOCK

Pamela Hall Adcock, 50, of the Bolens Creek Community went to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at St. Joseph Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Delois Owens Hall of Burnsville and Richard Hall of Micaville.

 

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her grandmother, Effie Silver of Burnsville; aunts:  Phyllis Delorne and husband, Lee, of Springfield, OR and Grace Miller and husband, J. W., of Burnsville; uncles:  Douglas Silver and wife, Bonnie, and Donald Owens and wife, Deanie, of Burnsville, John Silver of Columbia, SC and Charles Hall and wife, Gloria, of Micaville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Dr. Chris Morgan will officiate.  Burial will be in the Miller Cemetery on Ray Mine Road.

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

NANCY PENLAND FOXX

Nancy Penland Foxx, 88, of Bald Creek, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Mary Louise Peeler Penland and the wife of James R. Foxx, who died in 1984.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Louise Currie.  Nancy was a retired Yancey County School Teacher and a member of Bald Creek United Methodist Church.

 

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Mike Shuford will officiate.  Burial will be in the Holcombe Cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at the home of Ronnie and Nan Proffitt.

JANE MUMMERT

Jane Mummert, 68, of Burnsville died peacefully at her home on Saturday, December 7, 2013.  She was the daughter of the late William and Evelyn Wheeler.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Mummert. 

 

Jane’s life was one of service throughout her career and into retirement.  She was president of the Yancey Humane Society and worked tirelessly on behalf of homeless and neglected animals.  There are countless animals living a better life because of Jane’s courage to speak up for them. 

 

Jane is survived by her beloved dog, Hennessy and a large family of cherished friends.

 

At Jane’s request there will be no memorial service.  Donations in her memory may be made to the Yancey Humane Society, PO Box 1016, Burnsville, NC 28714.

RALPH FRANK HARRIS

Ralph Frank Harris, 87, Conover, passed away, Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born March 1st, 1925 in Micaville, Yancey County, NC, to the late Delzie Harris and Lela Hise Harris Chapo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Frank Harris, two sisters Pasty Evans and Faye Pyle. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Lindsey Reid Harris of Conover, two daughters, Beverly Stone and husband Gary Stone of Conover, Gail Hefner and husband Dennis Hefner of Hickory, four step children, Darlene Hatfield of Apache Junction, AZ, Tony Smith of Valdese, Coy Reid and wife Bunnie of Conover, Dorothy Walker and husband Jim of Winston Salem, a brother, Phil Harris and wife Mildred of Burnsville, two sisters, Robbye Murphy and husband Robert of Lincoln, Ca, Carol Little and husband Gary of Cleveland, Tn; Grandchildren, Dawn Newton and husband Jeff of Hickory, Sean McNeal of Austin, TX, Laura Herran and husband Roy of Montrose, Co, Scott Harris and wife Rebekah of Bossier City, La; 8 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren, and 17 step-grandchildren. He was a WWII Veteran serving in the US Navy. He got to travel the world and was very proud to have served his Country.

 

Ralph loved people, spent many hours playing his guitar and singing. He volunteered going to rest homes to bring some music to those that could not get out. He loved his churches and gave so much of his time and talents. The Lord was the most important thing in his life, then his family and friends. He volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels for a number of years, until he had a stroke and had to resign.

 

Donations in lieu of flowers should be sent to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658.

 

The funeral will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, Dec. 5th at Oxford Baptist Church, Conover, with internment following in the church cemetery. Catawba Memorial funeral home will be officiating.
