ROBERT "BOB" BROWN

Robert Jackson “Bob” Brown, 78, of Charlie Brown Road, went home to be with the Lord Friday, April 16, 2010, at his home surrounded by his loving family.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Charles Lee and Laura Banks Brown.  He was also preceded in death by sisters: Pearl Banks and Nancy Holcombe.  Bob was a US Army Veteran, farmer, dairyman and retired employee of Glen Raven Mills. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a great friend to all who knew him.

 

Surviving are his wife of 58 years:  Nora Belle Wheeler Brown; 5 daughters:  Robbie Brown, Judy Silvers and husband, Morris, Louann Brown, Amy Brown and Angie Anglin, all of Burnsville; a son:  George Brown and wife, Linda, of Kingsport, TN; 13 grandchildren:  Michelle Tabares, Aaron Collins, David Brown, Brian and Brandon Silvers, Crystal Wyatt, Adam, Josh and Brittney Brown, Justin and Randall Norton and Ryne and Preston Anglin; 8 great grandchildren; a sister:  Freida Bryson and husband, Hale, of Shelby; and, a brother:  Andy Brown and wife, Wanda, of Burnsville.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Revs. Gary Helton and Eugene Moore will officiate. Burial will follow in the West Burnsville Church Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 PM Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

BARBARA EFFLER

Barbara Effler, 73, of the Busick Community, went home to be with the Lord Friday, April 9, 2010, at Mission Hospital.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Laura Duncan Carroll.  She was also preceded in death by a sister:  Joyce Wilson.  Barbara was a member of Mt. Mitchell Baptist Church.

           

Surviving are her husband of 55 years:  Gail Effler; a daughter:  Regina Wilson and husband, Randy; a son:  Robert Effler and wife, Angie, all of Busick; grandchildren:  Brian and Kyle Wilson and Adam and Samuel Effler; a sister:  Cora Ward and husband, Herman, of Marion; a brother:  Latt Carroll and wife, Nell, of Lincolnton; and, several nieces and nephews.

           

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Forrest Westall will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 2PM Sunday in the Ballew Cemetery.

           

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

           

PAULA WIDENER

Paula Widener, 48, of Taylorsville, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, April 8, 2010 at her home   A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of Edward Mitchell and the late Dixie Mitton.  She was a member of the Life of Victory Church in Taylorsville.

           

Surviving, in addition to her father, are her fiancé:  Ralph Sprague, of Taylorsville; 2 sisters:  Linda Shumate of Canyon City, CO and Nancy McCaffrey of Eden, NC; a brother:  Eddie Mitchell of Taylorsville.  Several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is assisting the Widener family.

 

 A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Sunday in Happy Trails Cowboy Church in Taylorsville.

 

CARMON BRUCE RAMSEY

Bruce “Buzzy” Ramsey, 51, of Hendersonville died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 6, 2010.  He was the son of Earlene Phillips Ramsey of Fletcher and the late Bruce Ramsey.  Buzzy was a member of Fruitland Baptist Church and a graduate of Cane River High School.  He was a 25-year employee of Cranston Print Works.

           

 Surviving in addition to his mother, are his sons:  Aaron Bruce Ramsey and Anthony Kyle Ramsey of Hendersonville; his daughter:  Amber Michelle Ramsey of Fletcher; the mother of his children:  Felicia Ramsey of Hendersonville; 3 grandchildren:  Katelyn Ramsey, Cayden Ramsey and Gavin Howard and 2 expectant grandchildren; his siblings:  Debra E. Ramsey and Sharon R. Kast of Fletcher, Marcia R. Allison of Candler, David S. Ramsey of Hendersonville, Michael D. Ramsey of Arden, Cathy Creasman of Hendersonville, and Shelly R. Connor of Fletcher and 12 nieces and nephews. 

           

 Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. David MacEachern will officiate.  Burial will be in the Watts Cemetery at Bee Log.

           

 The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of his daughter, Amber Ramsey in Fletcher.

           

DENNIS JOHN SHEPHERD

Dennis John Shepherd, 54, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord on April 6, 2010.  He was the son of the late John and Ruby Shepherd of Burnsville.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister:  Loretta Shepherd.

           

 Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife:  Sharon Shepherd of the home; daughters:  Stephanie Ponder and husband, Michael, Staci Austin and fiancé David Bruce, all of Burnsville, and Tania Shepherd of Buncombe County; a son:  John Shepherd of Burnsville; stepdaughter:  Shelley Hoilman of Spruce Pine; stepson:  Jason Ogle and wife, Kim, of Burnsville; grandchildren:  Anthony and Amy Ponder, Tyler and Megan Austin, and Thomy Young, all of Burnsville, Riley Lockridge of Buncombe County, Justin and Houston Hoilman and Brooklyn Blevins, all of Spruce Pine, and Grayson Huskins and Landon Ogle of Burnsville; a brother:  Steve Shepherd and wife, Angie; a sister:  Sharon Harter and husband, Russ, all of Spruce Pine; and a very special friend Tommy “Hub” McIntosh of Burnsville.

           

 Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  The Revs. Ronnie Robinson, Jerry Shelton and Tommy Murphy will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11AM Friday in the John Shepherd Family Cemetery.

           

 The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at his home.

           

Alma J. Franklin

Alma J. Franklin, 67, of Burnsville went home to be with the Lord, Monday, April 5, 2010 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was daughter of the late Lee and Martha Silver Carroll and the wife of Ralph Franklin who died in 2002.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Randall Timothy Franklin.

           

 Surviving are a daughter:  Rita Woody and husband, Michael, of Green Mountain; 2 sons:  Michael Franklin and wife, Sherry, of Connellys Springs and Keith Franklin and wife, Jennifer, of Marion; 8 grandchildren; 2 sisters:  Zelma Carroll and Abigail Harris and husband, Pender, of Burnsville and a brother:  Clifton Carroll and wife, Louise, of Nebo.

           

 Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Jerry Shelton will officiate.   A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Piney Hill Church Cemetery.

           

 The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times will be at her home.

           

JANIE HANEY JOHNSON

Janie Haney Johnson, 84, of the Bald Mountain Community went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 1, 2010 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Sarah Byrd Haney and the wife of Virgil Johnson who died in 1960.  She was also preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.

         

 Surviving are a daughter:  JoAnn Johnson McCurry and husband, Robert; a granddaughter:  Teena McCurry; 2 grandsons:  Jamie McCurry and wife, Shana and Jeremy McCurry and wife, Tiffany, all of Burnsville; 3 great-grandchildren:  Megean, Colton and Robbie McCurry; a sister:  Mollie Quinn of Inman, SC; a sister-in-law:  Kathleen Haney of Burnsville; 5 step-children and several nieces and nephews.

           

 Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Billy Mitchell will officiate.  A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Fender Cemetery at Bee Log.

           

 The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of JoAnn and Robert McCurry.

           

 

MADGE BRYANT

Madge Bryant, 81, of Patterson Branch, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, March 31, 2010.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Nora Garland Bryant.  She was preceded in death by a son, Roger Bryant and a sister, Evelyn Woodby Mitchell.  Madge was a member of Patterson Branch Freewill Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.  She loved her Lord, her family and her friends.

           

 Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Fletcher Bryant; two daughters:  Nina Stevens of Green Mountain and Sandra Davis of Burnsville; 2 sons:  Steven Ray Bryant of Burnsville and Donald Lee Bryant of Green Mountain; a sister:  Wanda Bryant of Burnsville; a brother:  Lamar Bryant of Burnsville; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

           

 Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Patterson Branch Freewill Baptist Church.  Revs. Cecil Hensley and Brian Blankenship will officiate.  Burial will be in the Howell Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

           

 The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

CHRIS MacLEOD

Chris MacLeod, 20, of Burnsville, passed away Sunday, March 21, 2010.  Born in Ft. Collins, Colorado, he was a son of Walter MacLeod and Monica Cooper.  Chris had been a resident of Yancey County for the past 7 years.  A 2008 graduate of Mtn. Heritage, he was involved in the JROTC, achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major, and was on the wrestling team.  Chris was a student at Mayland Community College in the auto repair program.

           

Surviving are his Mother and Dad:  Monica and Scott Cooper of Burnsville; Father:  Walter MacLeod of Oaktown, IN; a sister:  Jennifer MacLeod of the home; grandparents:  David and Donna Black of New Mexico, John and Dorothy Kinch of Colorado, Esther Bertsch of Colorado, Hugh and Linda Foist of Washington, Ron and Paula Cooper of Indiana, and Jim and Virginia Fadely of Indiana; his fiancée: Tonya Huskins of Burnsville; and, numerous friends and church family.

           

A memorial service will be held at 7PM Friday in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.  The Revs. Jerry Shelton and Dick Westbrook will officiate.  Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery.

           

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

           

Memorials may be made to the family to offset medical expenses.

TED HAROLD CANIPE

Ted Harold Canipe, 71, of the Clearmont Community, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 20, 2010.  Born and raised in Yancey County, he was the son of the late Dewey and Beatrice King Canipe. 

 

Ted graduated from Clearmont High School in 1957.  He moved with his wife, Kay, to Baltimore, MD, where they raised their family in the Essex-Middle River area.  Ted was a member of the management team for General Motors, where he worked for 31 years at the Broening Highway Plant.  He volunteered his time with young people, coaching softball with the Bengies-Chase Recreation Council and Middle River Baptist in the local church league.

           

In 1990, Ted returned to Yancey County where he served as Chairman of the Yancey County Board of Elections, part-time school bus driver and substitute teacher.  He also drove for the National Forest Service, transporting crews to forest fires all over the South.  Through the Forest Service, Ted served with the Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster Recovery Team and Hurricane Katrina Disaster Team.

           

Ted loved spending time with family and friends.  He and his wife enjoyed RV travel, visiting 48 states and Canada, building friendships everywhere they went.

           

He was preceded in death by brothers:  Chester, Paul and Richard Canipe.

           

Surviving are his wife of 52 years:  Kay Letterman Canipe; two daughters:  Kimberly Bray and husband, Harry, of Bloomington, IL and Jill Malcolm and husband, John, of Parkland, FL; a son:  Jason Canipe and wife, Amber, of Jacksonville, FL; a brother:  Jim Canipe and wife, Brigette, of Tampa, FL; a sister-in-law:  Eyvonne Canipe of Green Mountain; and, 7 grandchildren:  Jim, Regina, Abigail, Peter, Victoria, Zoe, and Ava.

           

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 6PM at Peterson Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.  The family asks friends to come and share their memories.  A private burial was held in the Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill on March 20, 2010.
